NUGoKidney Welcomes Sci-High Summer Students

This summer NU GoKidney will welcome 5 highly motivated students from Holy Trinity High School - a school located on Chicago’s West Side - to participate in its inaugural Sci-High program.

What is Sci-High?

Sci-High invites exceptional students with a passion for science to participate in an 8-week immersive program with hands-on research in NU GoKidney’s biomedical research cores. Students will arrive on June 17th and assist on projects under the guidance of mentors in one of the three cores to build the leadership, technical, and analytical skills to achieve success in science and kidney research.

Along with learning valuable professional skills and experiencing research at a major university, students will also participate in a weekly summer seminar to reflect on their mentored research experience and learn about how to develop, assess, and talk about research.

Get to Know the Students

We're looking forward to working with this year’s group of Sci-High students:

  • Monserrat Estrada is a junior with a passion for learning how science can be used to help others. Last year, she participated in Solar Spotlight, assembling portable solar suitcases with ComEd engineers.
  • Gabriel Sheik is heading into his senior year and is a member of the robotics team, which placed third this year in the National Robotics Challenge. He is very curious about the intersection between engineering and medicine.
  • Danna Joyce Pichay, a junior, has developed a passion for anatomy and physiology after completing an independent study in the subject this year. Since then, she has been fascinated by the cardiovascular system and has been gobbling up all she can about the topic.
  • Aaron Jaszczor, a senior, and when he’s not leading in student government, participating in math competitions, or playing baseball, he’s pursuing his interests in medicine and science. In particular, he’s curious about cardiology, nephrology, and anesthesiology and plans to pursue a career in the health sciences.
  • Chantel Beltran is senior who has a strong interest in biology and biochemistry. This year she completed an experiment on how lights with different wavelengths influences physical activity levels.

We’re excited to have them join us for their summer! Please join us in giving them a warm welcome!

Students will be sharing their experience throughout the summer so keep an eye on our e-newsletter and @NU_Nephrology on Twitter.
